One-Room Class

Established in 2019, the "One-Room" class has been the beginning of our programs, persisting through the challenges of the pandemic with only a brief hiatus. The term "one-room" aptly captures the magic that unfolds within this diverse and dynamic setting. With a mix of ages, languages, cultural backgrounds, and academic levels, the class of 15 children embodies rich diversity.

We are thrilled to have Maria Herrera as our dedicated teacher for this class. Maria, a local educator, is committed to uplifting those around her through early childhood education. Leading the class from Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 11:30 am, Maria provides the stability and consistency essential for the continued success of this program.

The class's age range, spanning 4 to 10 years old, fosters comprehensive development across social, emotional, physical, and intellectual domains. Maria tailors worksheets and activities to suit individual needs, providing personalized attention to each student. Older children serve as positive role models and tutors for their younger peers, while younger ones are exposed to advanced concepts in math, reading, and writing.

Our full-time participants consist of foreign families residing in the community year-round, while the local population of children join in part-time. Attending TLC’s one-room class 1-3 days a week, they benefit from our program's immersive English curriculum and small class sizes. This hybrid approach ensures they move through the public school system while enjoying an enriching learning experience with TLC. This enriching exchange occurs in both English and Spanish, promoting bilingualism and cultural understanding among our students. The "One-Room" class epitomizes our commitment to inclusive and quality education, preparing children for success in a globalized world.

The minimal tuition we charge to participate in the one-room class serves as just enough to keep the program afloat. However, at TLC, we strive for more than just floating along; our goal is to achieve the seemingly impossible. Our mission is to provide access to quality education, and within the one-room class, we tackle this issue with a multi-pronged approach.

The next prong in our system involves improving Maria's educational level. With the help of donations, Maria has embarked on her educational journey. In February 2024, she commenced the first year of a four-year program at Martin Lutero University in Chinandega, pursuing a bachelor's degree in child psychology. This endeavor aims to equip Maria with a robust education, empowering her toward a brighter and more hopeful future.

Our subsequent prong is to recruit a bilingual support teacher with a tailored educational skill set. This dedicated professional will work alongside Maria, providing support in curriculum development, classroom enhancement, the creation of engaging learning environments, and leading STEM and project-based learning activities.

By employing a multi-pronged approach to building this program, we aim to imbue it with the strength and fortitude necessary to have a lasting impact on the community. We invite you to join us in this multifaceted and intergenerational effort to disrupt inequality in the world.
